Low carbon hydrogen and low carbon ammonia

Pioneering the use of hydrogen as energy.

Widely recognized for its potential to help reduce CO2 emissions and address global energy needs, Aramco is pioneering the use of hydrogen as an energy source.

In 2019 Aramco and Air Products inaugurated the first hydrogen fueling station in Saudi Arabia at Air Products' new Technology Center in the Dhahran Techno Valley Science Park. The pilot station fuels an initial fleet of six Toyota Mirai fuel cell electric vehicles with high purity compressed hydrogen.

We are also pioneering the use of low carbon ammonia a compound consisting of hydrogen and nitrogen which can contribute to meeting the world's growing energy needs in a reliable, affordable, and sustainable manner.

In September 2020 Aramco and the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan, in partnership with SABIC, successfully demonstrated the production and shipment of low carbon ammonia from Saudi Arabia to Japan with support from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Forty tons of high-grade low carbon ammonia were dispatched to Japan for use in zero-carbon power generation.

This was the world's first low carbon ammonia supply-chain demonstration a significant milestone and one of several pathways to achieving a Circular Carbon Economy (CCE)
