The Petro Rabigh project is a joint oil refining and petrochemical venture between Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical – based in Saudi Arabia.
To help grow Saudi Aramco’s petrochemicals operations, we partnered with Sumitomo Chemical, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, to create a new petrochemical complex in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia – the very first venture into the new petrochemical sector by Saudi Aramco.
Combining our rich supply of crude oil with Sumitomo’s expertise in producing and marketing petrochemical products, Petro Rabigh utilizes 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day, and ethane gas processing with its capacity recently expanded to 1.6 million tons per year. This produces a variety of refined petroleum and petrochemical products – such as heavy and light oil, naphtha and kerosene.
Shared opportunities
Following an IPO of Petro Rabigh on the Saudi Arabian stock exchange in 2008, Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical each hold 37.5% stake of the company – ensuring the businesses we form relationships with in Japan can also benefit from Saudi Arabia’s prosperous economy.
